Hi,

I am planning on buying Dragon Professional Individual v.15. I use Studio 2015 and MemoQ 2015 how well do these programs work together? I translate into German as well as into English. Is the Professional Individual v.15 edition language specific or can I train/use it for both languages?

Check this out Nov 24, 2016

Before you spend your money, please check this:
https://speechpad.pw/
This web app allows you to use it for free online dictation. If you like it, then you can have OS integration (dictate to wherever you put your cursor) for a measly annual fee.

I have been using it for a couple of months now and have been very happy.

Dear Recep,

the tool you recommend is cloud-based. Its FAQ says "Can Speech Pad works offline? No, Speech Pad uses Google back-end servers to provide speech recognition."

Before using this tool for translating, you will need to check with your client if this permissible.

Some of my clients add a standard text in every handoff email reminding me that I must not use any kind of cloud-based service, TM, anything online, as it will send the content of my translation to its provider, which would be a breach of confidentiality.

Happy translating,
Ricki

I am playing around with it now, and experimenting with its Windows integration mode. In fact, I am trying to type this post with it. It's not as fast as Dragon, which I also have and use, but it does seem to work rather well. I only had to correct two small typos so far. Make that four. In any case, very interesting! My experience so far has been that Apple's Siri and Android's dictation system do pretty well for simple, running sentences, but trip up on specific terminology. However, speechpad seems to be doing a pretty good job with this post! I followed the steps on the website, and after activating the Start recording button, everything I say appears here after a small lag.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, that will not work for me. As Ricki pointed out, there would be problems with confidentiality. I translate mostly patents and with new applications I am not even allowed to post a question on Kudoz. The other problem I would have is my internet connection (satellite). It's too slow to even work on the MemoQ server without setting everything to synchronize offline.icon_frown.gif

ok, did some quick testing of speechpad, and … Nov 24, 2016

Although very interesting, it doesn't really hold a candle to Dragon Professional Individual 15 (especially now that it has a brand new underlying engine –introduced after version 14 – based on neural net / AI magic), especially when combined with a voice command program such as KnowBrainer 2017.

Speechpad's fine for dictating simple pieces of continuous text, but is quite bad at single, or specialised words. You also can't select words and correct them, there is no way to teach the program anything, and commands are way more basic than KnowBrainer 2017 + Dragon. Basically only a handful of Chrome commands. You might be able to get a few things to work, such as opening your browser, but that's about it. I can do pretty much anything I can do with my keyboard or mouse, by voice, using KnowBrainer 2017 + Dragon.

And of course, there's the online confidentiality thing.

If you get an international version of Dragon, you get English along with it. For example, I have the Spanish version, and upon installation Dragon asked if I also wanted to install English. While both languages will be installed, they cannot be used simultaneously, you will need to create a separate profile for each, and will need to switch profiles (only one profile can be active at a time) to switch languages. This involves saving the active profile, closing it and opening the second profile, which can take a few minutes. So, to answer your question: yes, you can train and use Dragon with both languages, as long as you get the appropriate version.

As far as the compatibility between Dragon and Studio/MemoQ, I've heard that Dragon and MemoQ are fully compatible out of the box. I use Studio, which is a "non-supported" application for Dragon (meaning no full-text control). That has not kept me from using it successfully, though.
