Hi,

I'm a new member at Proz.com. I'm currently studying Translating and Interpreting here in Spain and i recently found out about this website. My question is; as a student...what things can i do in this website? (besides the contests) since the proper "jobs" are for graduated professionals.

Thanks in advance.

Many things Aug 28, 2008

Hello Kapazaa!

First, welcome in our community! Make yourself at home.
It's a good question you ask, and I'm glad you did, I'm sure many other StudentZ are wondering the same.
The site has a lot to offer but you have to take the time to explore it, because it's quite...big!

As a Student member, you can benefit from many site features apart from the jobs section. The ProZ.com Contests, of course, but also the ProZ.com StudentZ Contests, right here. You also have access to this forum, where you'll meet translation students from all over the world, and you also have exclusive access to the other StudentZ Forum, the "Pub", a member-exclusive place where you can suggest improvments of students features, or new ones.
You also have discounts on ProZ.com Conferences and Trainings, on books and softwares (from ProZ.com partners), access to the mentorship programm and last but not least, the KudoZ area opens more widely.
I probably forgot some - don't hesitate guys !

CheerZ,
Anne

Hello Kapazaa and Anne
I’m also a new student member at Proz.com. I-m studying Translation at the School of Languages , UNC, in the city of Cordoba, Argentina. And I ask myself the same question as you do, Kapazaa. And I wonder...How can we compete with translators with a lot of years of experience here, at Proz community?
I find the Kudoz areas very interesting!!!! and Glossaries very useful. i`ve attended one Proz Conference and one training seminar... personally, they have be

The Mentoring page is here :http://www.proz.com/?sp=exchange&exchange_area=mentoring

Also, I invite you, as a future general reference and to get familiarized with the site and its many features, to read the FAQ: http://www.proz.com/faq

Finally, to answer your question on competing against experienced translators - I'd say you have a good point, yet it is possible to win. It already happened that student membersq won in their language pairs, one of them being English to French, where the competition was huge! You can visit the past contests page on http://www.proz.com/?sp=contests&sp_mode=past_contests. Contests are not only about winning, they are really great fun and they enable you, precisely as a student, to improve yourself.

Hope that helps!
Feel free to ask if you're lost, the site being that big I know it's impressive at the beginning. You'll get used to it and soon you'll find your way in!

CheerZ,
Anne

Anyway, it is my pleasure to meet you all, I will take full usage of this site as best as I can.
