salutations Oct 11, 2007

Hello everyone,

Thanx for the warm welcome. My name is Gabriela Luta and I am from Romania. I am a 3rd year student in translation (applied modern languages actually- EN&SP) at the University of Babes-Bolyai (Cluj-Napoca), but I am currently in Ireland, Limerick with an Erasmus scholarship. This is quite a challenge for me, both from a cultural and linguistic point of view. It's not that easy and it's not all that great. But I am trying to enjoy every minute spent in Ireland. People

People are truly amazing and I intend to do some travelling next week (going to Dublin...uhhuuu) so I hope to 'shed' some of the stess. I've met a lot of Erasmus students from other countries...So I'm not only improving my English, but also my Spanish and French(not as much as I would like to,though).

I would really like to do some work as a translator, but I think that interpreting is much more interactive (and to some extent, more difficult- open to debate of course). So I would love to experience that as well.

What else should I share with you?...I am quite sociable (strictly in time of need;)) and anxious to meet similar or totally different people. I would also love to travel more and practice my languages.

I've just turned 21 and I feel that it is now when I have actually started to think, therefore live. Coming to Ireland has triggered a shift in my way of thinking. I have a different perspective on the world, the people and on myself. This is my 6th week here and I've been well and...not so well. But I honestly believe that every experience, be it good or bad, is useful.
I hope I'll go to Spain next year...it's sunnier
and I hope to find out more about you guys...so, TAG! YOU'RE IT...

CHEERS,
Gabri

First of all, special thanks to Anne for the warm welcome and it's a great pleasure to be with you all guys and to read about you.

I am a new student member of ProZ, so let me introduce myself.

I've born and live until now in Latvia. If any of you doesn't know about location of this country - it is one of Baltic states, situated in Eastern Europe, close to Russia.
For about 50 years our country was a part of Soviet Union, so now here are almost as many Russians as Latvians, and my native language is Russian. But, since the beginning of school days I am surrounded by native Latvian speakers, so I know this language as good as Russian.

Besides the secondary education, I have finished a music school and, after that, Music College. I graduated as Musician, Specialist of History and Theory of Music.

Though I like music very much and succeeded in this field, I chose to not continue musical education (due to some important reasons, but mostly listening to my intuition So I decided to go to university and for a long time coudn't choose what to study. Again, listening to my "inner voice", I chose to study Russian philology.

Now I am a 2nd year student of Russian linguistics and am really happy about that!

Translation is not my speciality, but I have some expirience of translating different texts, mostly from Russian into Latvian, and am going to study translation after graduating linguistics (Master....hopefully).

In the Music college I have learnt Italian for 4 years, but long time no use - and I forgot most of it successfully.
Later I have learnt German for a half of year and think I know it even better than Italian

Now I study Czech at the university. Hope to go to Praga next year by students' exchange programme. For that I have to learn Czech very heartily

Well, am a bit confused because all of you are so expirienced and educated as a translators, but I am a beginner. The reason why I am here is to read, learn and communicate (sorry, my English is not perfect yet, too

What else?
Now, music is my hobby. I play piano, sing and compose. Also I have two pupils - small girls, I teach them to play piano. And enjoy this very much
Besides music, my second passion is plants, particularly cactuses. The flowerpots with them are all around my computer. And if I could mention here my problems: I want to have some more plants and don't have a place where to put them!

And that's all.
If you are reading this, hope you are not too bored with my story

Nice to meet you all guys!

Thanks to ProZ for giving this opporutnity for all translation students to be together

¡Hola a todos! Oct 19, 2007

My name is Aldana, I am nineteen years old and I am a student of English Translation at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, in Argentina.
I also work for the UNLP as a translator in a computer science-related laboratory of research and development; mainly advanced students work there, but there are many graduates and teachers and then there’s me, in freshman year. When I began translating there I didn't have a clue of what I was doing, but I am learning quite fast and everyday I thank that my very first job is around teachers and students who take the time to explain certain concepts which I would certainly not have interpreted correctly without their help.
I have been studying English since I was about twelve years old, and it’s always been easy and fun for me. Although I love English, I am hoping to learn many more languages, maybe not enough to translate, but to at least understand if I am spoken to. Also, as a product of my environment, computer science is slowly growing on me and I have attended networking courses to get to understand at least some of what my coworkers do.
I am planning on taking up another language in the summer break (in Argentina that is from November - December to early March) when I have finished sitting for the finals and things at work are more relaxed. As you can see, I am always eager to learn, and if I am confident enough with the topic, maybe teach something as well, so I would love for students of Spanish (or English - if I can help you, I will) to contact me for any doubts or just to talk (that doesn’t have to wait until the summer break).
It has been lovely to read all your introductions!
Cheers!

Hallo allemaal! Oct 19, 2007

Well, hello everyone

I joined a few weeks ago, actually, but haven't had much time yet to check out these forums (and I think this student corner wasn't there yet, when I joined).

Anyway, a little bit about myself. My name is Marjolein Wessels, I'm 23 years old and I'm from the Netherlands. For the past five years I've been a student of English, and I'm almost done with my Master's degree in translation.<

I'm not sure yet I want to make a career out of translating, though I love doing it. Currently I'm looking for any job where I can make use of the things University taught me.

In my free time I like to read, write and draw, or visit my favourite sites (half my life takes place online, I swear). My fiancé and I are currently living with his parents so we're desperately looking for a place of our own (which is not easy to do in Utrecht, let me tell you that XD).

I guess that's it. I've been reading this thread in bits and pieces, and I love the diversity here, it's amazing.
