Anyone native English speakers to talk to?
Thread poster: Maria94

I'm having a hard time finding any site where I can find English native speakers, mostly British, to talk to to improve my English. Therefore I'm writing here.
I'm 16 years old, wanting to talk to someone via Skype, mostly for school purposes, as my finals is coming up and I need to practise my convensational English.
Talking to natives can improve my English, and make me speak fluently, which I'm almost doing now, but I still need the 'little extra'. I believe talking to natives ca

If anyone wants to talk to me, I would be more than happy!

Thanks!

Edit: I read Madeleine MacRae Klintebo's post, and removed my skype name.

Some sites Jun 1, 2010

There are many sites dedicated to putting language learners from different countries in contact with each other. If you search, you can probably find more than these.

Hi Maria, Jun 1, 2010

I think it's good that you want to improve your English outside school. However, there are a few things you should consider before posting your Skype name on a public forum such as this:

1. When posting on ProZ which is a site for language professionals, you will probably find that most members/users are here for a reason - to earn money. Therefore they're most likely to want to charge for their professional services as David has already mentioned.

2. Even more important, you will have no idea who might call you on Skype. Most people in the world are great and only have the best of intentions, but there are sadly enough some who will take the opportunity to contact a 16 year old girl for all the wrong reasons.

Now back to request, how about finding out if any of your (trusted) friends on Facebook/MySpace (I assume you use those sites) knows somebody who knows somebody who knows... That way you're more likely to stay safe on the internet.

Alternatively, ask your teachers (yes, I know teachers probably aren't your favourite creatures, but you will be amazed at what they actually know) and maybe your school has some kind of link up with an English speaking school?

Anyway, stay safe on the internet and remove your Skype name from the forum soonest.

Madeleine

you can also use the exchange feature http://www.proz.com/?sp=exchange if you so like.

Please let me know if you need help.

Would it not be an idea to include this in Proz' guidelines? That e-mails, skype addresses, etc. will be removed by the moderator?

Best,
Ronald

Jan, I had a quick look at the site you referred to, but it doesn't automatically indicate a safe space for a teenager. Looks a bit adult (in the best sense) to me. What Maria needs, I think, is a place to find other teenagers, not adults.

Maria, I don't know where in Norway you live, but if it's Oslo, you might find that there are English speaking/bilingual schools you can contact. Not language schools, but schools/classes set up for the children of foreigners temporarily living in Norway. My son attended one of these schools when we lived in Sweden for a few years.

Finding a student at one of these schools will not only be safer, but also better for your English. Chatting and laughing over a latte is much more fun when you can see each other.
