How to remember difficult words...

1. Draw 3 columns on a sheet of paper.
2. Draw a picture of a new word at the top of the first column.
3. Write the first letter of the word in the second column.
4. Write the word in the third column.
5. Continue with other new words you want to remember.
6. Test yourself. Cover the second and third column. Can you remember the word from the picture in the first column? Yes? Go on to the next picture. No? Look at the

Can you remember now? Yes? Check the answer in the third column and go onto the next word. No? Check the answer in the third column and test yourself again later.

I Heard a Word- Say “I heard a word the other day. It means _________. It’s the opposite of ____________.” Give other clues to the meaning of the word and have your child try to guess the word.

Try to use the new words either in class, for homework or in some other way

Write short stories or paragraphs connecting the words and expressions that you want to learn

Keep the words you want to learn in a small notebook with an example sentence. You can then take it with you wherever you go and when you have a few minutes (whilst waiting for a bus), test yourself.

A Japanese idea, these neat little blank study cards held together on a ring . Simply write your target language word on one side, and the English on the reverse.

Spend at least 15 minutes every day reading either a daily newspaper or a weekly news magazine.
As you read, circle words that are unfamiliar to you. After you finish reading the article, return to the circled words to see if you can define them, using context clues. Then look them up in a dictionary, comparing your approximate definition with the actual definition. Then add each word, its definition, and its sentence in a vocabulary notebook or on a 4 x 6 index card

Word association : write a key word in the middle of a page and draw a bubble around it. Then draw lines out from this word connected to smaller bubbles. In the smaller bubbles you can add words associated with the main word.

For example, you could write "PC" in the middle of a page. Then the smaller bubbles could contain words such as "keyboard", "mouse", "software", "delete", "screen " .

Using Thesaurus is another best way to increase your vocabulary. Use any word editor, which has Thesaurus. Select a word and see the Thesaurus. It will give you a set of other words, which you can use by replacing the current word.

Beginner to Intermediate

1- Ask the students, working on their own, to complete the following sentence stems in as many varied ways as they can: at least seven completions for each sentence.

1- Ask the students, working on their own, to complete the following sentence stems in as many varied ways as they can: at least seven completions for each sentence.

2- Ask a student to come to the board and act as a class secretary. The students shout out all the nouns and verbs they have used in their completions. Fill in the board with the students´lexis.

3- In fours the students read out their sentences to each other.
