Hi all,

What are your experiences with using Transit? Recommendable??

I need to have Transit because one of my clients requires it.
Can it be downloaded for free? If not what is the cost.

Thanks!
Sarah

Transit 3.0 Satellite PE is free Nov 19, 2008

You can download it at http://www.star-group.net/star-www/software/transit/star-group/eng/transit_transit-satellite-pe.html

Also do not forget to download the "computer based training" file.

Good experience with Transit Nov 19, 2008

Transit comes in various versions.
The Satellite version is free of charge, and can be downloaded at
http://www.star-group.net/star-www/software/transit/star-group/eng/transit_transit-satellite-pe.html (Transit 3.0 Satellite PE – installation build 267). It has quite limited functionality, but if the agency prepares the project and supplies the reference material and the dictionary, you can work with it without problems.
Discuss with the agency whether they thought of this version. It is quite likely; most agencies use Transit in this way.
If you need to buy a higher version, you will need to shell out at least 500 euros (Smart version). Strangely, prices are not published, so this price may not be accurate. The professional version is well above EUR 1000.
There are a lot of translators who love Transit, others dislike it as it has a quite different approach than Trados. You will need to invest a bit of time into learning its usage, but the learning curve is perfectly reasonable in my experience. Personally, I have a very high opinion of Transit; its dictionary module beats all other CAT tools hands down.
If you can work with the free version, you should give it a try.
Kind regards,
Attila

I'm one of those translators! And Attila described Transit perfectly.

Me too! Dec 18, 2008

Star Group staff from Jakarta office came and instruct our English into Vietnamese team how to use Transit several months before they got big translation contract. Now I use Transit regularly for translating most of common files, including IDD, MIF....

To me, Transit is the best of the best!

Cheers!
