A tragedy, indeed.

Strange that the statements were not translated; it's part of the interpreter's job to not only take the statement in the SL, at the same time providing an interpretation, but at the end to also make a translation into English.

I agree that this is a shocking tragedy. After all, this situation does not involve obscure languages spoken by only a few hundred people. Both languages have millions of speakers (100+ million for Russian and about 2.5 million for Dari) and a motivated individual could find competent translators for both within a week (within a day for Russian).

This appears to be a case of gross incompetence on the part of the provincial authorities involved. It's a shame that justice was not served in this case (one way or the other, whether for the victim or the accused). And so needlessly...

Unfortunately, not a surprise. In my 14 years in the British police, during which time budgets were devolved to Divisional (City) police management level, I saw first-hand that penny-pinching increasingly obscured justice.
One has to feel for the poor victim, and equally, in a country whichs claims to promote fair democracy and speedy justice, the opportunity for the defendant to have his day in court.
