A great example of crowdsourcing May 5, 2010

The project is truly fascinating: there are loads of excellent speakers; one could spend whole weeks with just watching these videos. Sharing them with a wide public is a great idea.

It is an equally great pity that TED chose crowdsourcing for the subtitle translation. Take a good look at José Henrique's criticism of the quality of the subtitle translation. In my native language, Hungarian, the quality of the translations is consistently poor. The main ideas are conveyed, but there is so much more a professional translator could have added. It is a very far cry from what viewers of quality TV programs with professional subtitles are used to.

The idea of "sharing the knowledge freely with everyone" is, in itself, a noble one. But when it means sacrificing quality to such an extent, I think that they would have been much better off choosing a different route: a selection of a good number of videos, and a fund-raising campaign to pay professional subtitle translators.

A great idea wasted.
