Enchantment into Chinese characters Aug 7, 2010

As a foreigner who studied Japanese over 30 years ago, I have been much attracted by Kanji or Chinese characters that are also used in Japanese. After mastering about 1800 basic words, I rarely seek dictionaries to get meanings of new words since the basic characters gave mostly what they are saying. In addition, spelling (also in Chinese) is defined mostly by shape of the characters. Kanji and Chinese characters create compound words and complex words by both arraying basic characters or merger into new shape with trace of basic characters.

In this way, USA is meant a beautiful country, UK as a brave country, France as a legal country … Even Kanji and Chinese characters are not alphabets/letters, they are orient languages that function effectively. They can be written on both vertical and horizontal orientations. The compound word can be shortened without distorting the meaning e.g. from 4 characters to 2 characters. Therefore, Japanese people know clearly that Todai = Tokyodaigaku=University of Tokyo etc.
Chinese is used in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore and all China towns of the world. Since population of China is the top number in this globe, influence of China and its culture, including the language, are growing continuously.

The European firms who move to localize names into Chinese may move too slowly to exploit strong points of Chinese characters, but I expect more firms will follow suit quickly.
Of course, the double-byte characters of the globe are referred to Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc. This makes European computer system localization to the Orient took rather long time. But this will be accelerated through Chinese localization of the company names above.

Best Regards,
Soonthon L.
