Foreign medical students and recent medical documents in Japan Aug 26, 2010

Many of my friends are graduates in Japanese universities on medicine and nurse. They explained that German terminology were widely use in medical world of Japan. They needed to sit for medical practice license examination in Thailand where English medical terminology is conventional. Andrew N. Nelson is a Westerner who strongly insisted to take medical practice license examination in Japan where medical terms were mostly in complicated Chinese characters (Kanji). His effort resulted in a very good Japanese-English Character Dictionary in year 1962. Those seniors devoted intensively to have master medical achievements in Japan. Now during the Internet age, it is not difficult to check Japanese-English glossary of medicine/nurse science. Thanks to globalization! Last week I translated AIDS and dental documents from Japanese to Thai of about 20,000 words for Thai trainees in this month-end in Osaka area. I remind of those gaps of medical convention. But the source documents I translated last week were partially in rather good English version written by Japanese doctors. I always translate many medical examination reports from Thai to Japanese or English [for Japanese patients sitting for checkup in Thailand where medical fees are lower]. I am happy that Japanese medical (and nurse) world now has potential to use English: this is better for translators--we never have medical Japanese-Thai-Japanese glossary to refer to.
