Another way to approach the issue of translation and salaries is to ask yourself if you would recommend a career in translation to a teenager who is beginning to think about career options. I for one would not. (Learning and cultivating a passion for languages [one's own and foreign] yes; translation as a career, not so much.)
Many of us need little convincing regarding the abundance of translation opportunities of the "drudge" variety. Don't those of us who come here frequently see this on a daily basis? ▲ Collapse

Does "innovate" have a special meaning in the US?
Feb 13, 2011
I'm asking myself if "innovate" has a special meaning in the US that it doesn't have elsewhere. Because the report defines "the top 10 innovative sectors" as the sectors where "jobs will be most needed in USA in the future". And... in the list is a job called "innovator". I wonder what he does.

The report does mention earnings but I get the impression from the job gap web site (which is what this report is about) that the rankings refer to highest shortage of workers (which is somewhat similar to "number of available jobs").

special meaning of "innovative"
Feb 13, 2011
As you may have noticed, U.S. marketers and politicians are "innovators" in coming up with word usage that is meaningless, but sounds good until you think of it. For example, a "Sputnik moment," for an economy that no longer produces much of anything itself, but imports everything from shoes to power plants.
