If anything, being bilingual promotes self-esteem. If you lose fluency in your native language, you lose a part of yourself...a part of your identity. If you are able to keep this identity by preserving your native language and at the same time be fluent enough in English to get around, then you feel satisfied and peaceful. I know this because though I have not forgotten my native English, I have no trouble communicating in Spanish here in Chile.
