May not be enough in the long run Apr 3, 2013

Canada is a land of migrants. Currently the two main languages are English and French, but in the long run as more and more people with other linguistic backgrounds land in Canada, it will fast turn into a multi-lingual country like India. Canada, already has substantial numbers of Hindi/Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil and other Indian language-speaking citizens, and it will do well to plan for a multi-lingual future rather than bank on the current two-language formula. Already, pandering to the two-language formula is pushing the country to division into two with Quebec wanting a separate country status. A multi-lingual policy would do much to counter this fissiparous tendency. But politicians never think long-range, as they are blinkered by the next elections five years on.

Our experience in Spain Apr 3, 2013

Our experience in Spain is that when governments begin to invest in multilinguism, or in a regional language for that matter, they give languages more rights than the people who speak them (or don't speak them), and the end result is an alienated society, one where neighbours despise each other for reasons of origin or language spoken.

Public money should be invested in teaching one common language to keep the people's long-term ability to effectively communicate, work, and study wherever they like in the whole of the country. People interested in their own regional culture and language should invest their own time and money to preserve it.
