As many of you are aware, ProZ.com has been supporting the non-profit Translators without Borders for the past several years; ProZ.com built the platform that TwB uses to carry out its (volunteer) translation work.

After three years of cooperating (and about 16 million words passed), we feel that the platform has gotten fairly useful, at least for the type of work that is typically done by TwB, ie. basic translation of (usually short) documents. It occurs to us that the software may be useful to ProZ.com members who do a lot of this type of work, so we have decided to open up additional instances of it for use by others.

To be clear, the "translation center" that ProZ.com has built for TwB is not the sort of comprehensive TMS system that you can find in the market today. This is a simple tool that enables you to efficiently route work to translators with whom you already have a relationship. The tool has a nice interface, there are good communications features, it integrates with ProZ.com profiles, clients can check in if they like, and so on. If you are doing a lot of emailing back and forth with clients and translators (as TwB had been before we built the tool), this platform will save you some time and hassle. (Certainly if you are in the unique situation of being a translation company that puts clients and translators into direct contact and communication, this platform could be very useful indeed. It can be almost self-serve in that case.)

But having been built specifically for the needs of TwB, there are a number of things it does not have: there are no provisions for payment, for example. Non-trivial workflows are not supported. It is really only for translation of documents. TM's can be uploaded and shared, but there is no MT or TM built into the platform.

Anyway, if you are a ProZ.com member and would like to use the platform to get work done by your translators, please let us know by replying below or submitting a support request. We'll set up the first five or so who respond (if there are even five who are interested) and then go from there.

If we have multiple requests, we'll give preference to corporate members.

As always, feedback is welcome.

We'll post again when we're ready for more people to try it out.

Looking for a few more small translation companies to try out the platform May 20, 2014

We've made a first round of improvements based on feedback from early users, including the ability to track invoices and purchase orders, and a bit of financial reporting.

We're now looking for another ten or twenty translation companies to try out the platform.

If you outsource jobs to translators with whom you have an existing relationship and you'd like to try out the new platform, please request access by submitting a support request.

Thanks,

Jason
