WTO documents translation and theory

Chinese to English
Apr 20, 2008

Dear all,
I am Michael, a postgraduate student in Shanghai,China. I am working on my post-graduation thesis Close Translation Approach to WTO Legal Text E-C Translation.
I don’t know if you have paid attention to the study on WTO documents translation. With my knowledge, few studies are undertaken on WTO documents translation. Some papers on it are found lack of theoretical arguments or isolated between theoretical arguments and text analysis. So I want to know:
1) How about the study on WTO documents translation in your country? Can you recommend me some good papers and books about that?
2) What major differences do you think WTO legal English makes from legal English? I find WTO legal texts are totally general and relatively easy not as difficult as specific laws. And its language are more formal ,literal, fixed and general than specific laws.
3) Do you think the translation approach to legal text or WTO legal text is more descriptive or prescriptive?
4) I once named my thesis title An Analysis on Equivalent Translation in WTO Legal Texts Translation. But I find Equivalence too ideal. Some developed it with “near equivalence”. In this sense, do you think there is much difference “Equivalent translation” and “Close Translation”?

Thanks for your time and advice.
