I'm trying to teach myself Japanese for fun - problem is, how do you get the symbols for the writing on the computer? Does anyone know?

language - instructions for windows XP Sep 8, 2008

Go to Control Panel
Click on Language Options
Add Other Languages
Click Languages Tab
Install East Asian Languages
Click Languages Tab
Click Details
Under Installed Languages, Add Japanese
Click Apply
When you open an Office product right click the taskbar and select the languages toolbar.
On the languages toolbar you should now have "JP" for Japanese
Clicking on it should bring up your IME

In case you use MS Windows OS... Sep 8, 2008

yeah... with Peter...

Windows98
start the browser –> load “windowsupdate.microsoft.com” –> select “Support for Japanese Language” from “Updates” –> click “Add” and “Install”
restart the PC, below “System Control” –> “Software” you see the item “Japanese Language Support”

Windows2000
system control –> settings for countries, tab “General” –> activate “Language settings” for the system “Japanese” –> take over
you need the Windows 2000-CD and must restart the PC

WindowsXP
system control –> options for regions and languages, tab “Languages” –> additional support of languages –> activate “Files for East Asiatic Languages” –> take over
you need the Windows XP-CD and must restart the PC

That's my first advice to install the Japanese fonts...Afterwards you have to get familiar with the usage of the specific toolbar. However, it is really no big deal and if you have time enough...just try...use entry in Romanji and then the space bar in order to gain the different options (Kanji view). By hitting enter you make your choice of the desired combination. Just give it a try...;-))

Greetings

Katrin
