Has anybody ever had any issues translating documents for the Chinese government, i.e. having to rewrite text to accommodate the government?
Thanks for any feedback.

Hi Susanne

I haven't been in that position, no, but just curious...

What kind of translation, Chinese to English, English to Chinese? What kind of agency are/were you translating for? What were your terms of reference like? (This could be a theory issue, or it could be a business issue, I suppose.)

As to theory, there are different styles and schools of translation I suppose; China has its own traditions in this regard. As I understand it paraphrase might be a possibility, but see what others say.

As to text types, they may have different styles. I would say marketing texts, for example, could be quite literary in style, but see what others say.

See: Yan Fu, for example.

Suggestion: You could also ask in the Chinese Forum...
