Languages or countries? Jan 3, 2004

For instance Finland has two official languages, SV and FI. But the country symbol ist FIN. And is Yugoslavia a language? And in the Latin American countries they speak Spanish or Portuguese, not Bolivian etc.

Country codes, not language codes Jan 3, 2004

ISO 3166 gives country codes, not 'language' codes. South Africa, for example, has nine official languages.

These are country codes, but Jan 3, 2004

indeed, I suggest always to use ISO 639-1 2-letter language codes:

http://www.oasis-open.org/cover/iso639a.html

There are also 3-letter language codes ISO 639-2
http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/englangn.html
but they are coonfusing indeed.

Yes yure right, Countries! Jan 3, 2004

Well there are countries indeed, but in spanish, for example, to differentiate the peculiarities of each country you can use (as CAT Systems use for his TMs)for Bolivia ES-BO.
I suppose for Finland is the same procedure.

Have a nice day

I copy&paste the wrong list. well it is good too in case you are working wit a CAT program and work with a language speaking in differents countries.
For example it is good to recognize that spanish from Bolivia is ES-BO. So you can make some changes in a TMX if you have some problems importing a TXT into a TM where you have indicated ES-ES.

ProZ, however, uses three-letter codes. ESL is the ISO 639/2 code for Spanish.

ESL or SPA ? Jan 4, 2004

Hello

ProZ, however, uses three-letter codes. ESL is the ISO 639/2 code for Spanish.

in the list given above it is SPA and ES (for the language...)?

cf.
http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/englangn.html

Kurt

PS.
But according to the following list, there seem to be indeed two designations?:

esl/spa es Spanish

cf.
http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/IG/ert/iso639.htm

I remain with ES ;) Jan 4, 2004

Why 3 letter? than Spanish from Argentina should be Esl-Arg?(it sound so awfull)what means the "L" in Esl ? why SPA?, sorry Mr. Bush but my country is España and not Spain.
I think the combination Language(639-1)-Country(if needed) is OK.

The first time i saw "Esl" was here in Proz, but I work with CATs for a long time an never saw it bevor.
