You need a strategy Sep 28, 2010

Or, in other words, you need to have well-defined steps in your work. If you have a mentor, he/she should help you with the narrowing of the topic. What food? What king of labels? Is it about the ingredients, or instructions how to prepare the ingredients?

A well-defined title will help you not to wander too much. And that is the most important step when starting.

As for the bibliography: I'm afraid I cannot list a single book about labels. However, there are numerous scholarly resources (for example scholar.google.com, EBSCO, JStore etc) which you can browse and search.

label Translation - a few thoughts and issues Dec 6, 2010

Hi Katherine

An interesting topic for a dissertation, though I would agree with Mlinar that there isn't much written on the subject. Food labelling is of course subject to quite tight legal requirements in many jurisdictions, the EU for example has specific requirements, and rulings on approved ingredients for all EU languages. In the US the FDA controls labeling requirements. As we specialise in translating food labels, our site has some useful content and blog articles, which will give you some general background from the point of view of a European Translation Services Company, the most relevant page is www.betterlanguages.com/translation-services/label-and-packaging-translation/food-label-translation/. I would be happy to answer any direct questions about food label translation. We translate food labels mainly for European markets, but also for the US and Canada, and Middle and Far East. Hope this is helpful.

Kindest regards

Mike
