Digital photo from a regular photo?

This question is not directly related to translation but to adding a link to a web page (my ProZ profile). I'm afraid I'm usually about a decade behind the latest technological developments, so this question might be absurd: is it possible to create a digital photo from the negative of a regular photo?

All you need is a scanner Feb 14, 2004

Kim,

for scanning negatives (or slides) you need a high-end scanner. Some photo service providers offer negative/slide scanning for a fee.

However, if you have a photo print made from the negative, any consumer scanner (one of your friends will surely have one) is sufficient to make a scan that is perfect for a web page.

Ask at the copy/printshop near you Feb 14, 2004

You dont't need to buy the brewery if you want to drink a beer...
However, there are scanners available now (in Europe at least) from Epson for abt. 200 Euro with the functionality of scanning negatives.
But a copyshop will do it for you for maybe 1 $.
Best regards
Andrzej

Endre hat Recht Feb 14, 2004

Tim,

ich habe z.B. mein Bild aus einem Polaroid-Foto. Nur einscannen - Du kannst dann auch das Bild zurecht schnippeln (vor oder nach dem Scanvorgang).

Better from a photo than negative Feb 14, 2004

Scanning a negative and turning it into a digital image requires some manipulation using software. If you have a photo, you're probably better off using that as a source, unless it's torn/scratched, etc.
As someone pointed out, if you need to do this on an occasional basis, you're better off finding a photo shop that offers this service.

I guess it is not possible from a negative...you would need a normal picture...
beacause in the negative the colours are *negative* Hope you understand what I mean,

Scanning software often has an option to"reverse"the image Feb 14, 2004

so that a negative image comes out as a positive one. That part of it is feasible, and I have known people talk about having done it (scanning a negative successfully, not reversing the image which is straightforward) - although I have never made a picture from a negative myself and so can't say anything about the results from direct experience.

No problem! Feb 14, 2004

There are indeed scanners that can do that!
A friend of mine has bought himself such a scanner with which he can scan in all the negatives of old photos and digitalize them that way.
He even sent me right away a photo by e-mail that he had made from me 20 years ago!

Thanks Feb 15, 2004

My thanks to everyone for your helpful info. Actually, it doesn't have to be a negative. I'll take my photos down to the local photoshop and have them scanned.

Best wishes, Kim

If you have Windows, the easier way would be to use Microsoft Photo Editor that comes with it. Simple to use and no new software needed.
Hope to help.

Graphics editors Feb 15, 2004

You can find many good graphics editors for free. I suggest you visit the Graphics Editors section of Nonags:

http://www.nonags.com/nonags/gredit.html

You will find many good programs there. I will not suggest you one particular program, take a look at the descriptions, and download the program which better fulfills your needs.

My Plustek OptiPro UT24 Scanner scans negatives and positives, no problems. I have now pictures from my 35 year old negatives without having a paperprint before.
