I'm sure I'm not alone in looking at the profiles of others working in my pairs. This morning though I came across someone who deals with so many languages I lost count, over 40 working pairs. Beats even the famous Kudoz asker.
Is this really possible?

Not an agency or an outsourcer? Aug 17, 2011

I sometimes see agencies/outsourcers whose working language pairs are listed as "All languages supported".

They are too shy to mention... Aug 17, 2011

Some day one of them will have the guts to state:
"I work in all language pairs supported by Google Translator!"

Some may work with a network of other free lancers .... Aug 17, 2011

Whether it be a free lancer or agency there is the possibility to work with other collegues in sub contracting their language pairs or voice over or other competencies related to the business a way to broaden one's capabilities to draw clients.

Not too impressive Aug 17, 2011

Yes, I see this too, they say they can handle an impressive number of languages. Maybe they can order a beer in ten languages?

To be able to translate, one must be totally fluent in the languages involved. Myself, I would not trust anyone who makes such claims any farther than I could throw them. When I see one with a long list of language pairs, I just laugh. Then some have not even hit age 30 yet. I laugh again even more. No way.

Hi Susanna, Aug 18, 2011

Anything to do with the bulk e-mails an agency sent us yesterday? (I saw your name on the list they forgot to hide).

If so, I noticed that too and the person (who outsources work but is not an agency) also had a very impressive number of WWA entries.

Ivana

Edited: actually, just checked again and there is also a full page of Blue Board entries left by people who have worked for the freelancer. Seems more like a one-person agency.

Number of languages Aug 18, 2011

How many is too many?
Some people are excellent language learners, for others learning languages is more difficult.
I agree that someone offering a dozen languages probably isn't very good in half of them, but at least some people are able to become highly proficient in four or five. It also depends on which languages. Claiming to be able to translate French, Italian, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian is more credible than the claim of being able to translate Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Hungarian and French, for example.

it is indeed Ivana! And it looks to me like the job referred to in the email for which we know a PO was requested, is being outsourced!
