Hi Everybody!

I was told that encantar can be used in forms such as encantamos, etc. I astonished, as I thought it could only be used in third forms similar to gustar: encanta, encantan. Is it possible for encantar to be used in any form other than encanta or encantan? I have looked for every resource available, online and offline, and nothing has been made clear to me on this matter. It has been quite frustrating. Any help

Kudoz Jun 4, 2004

Hi Vivek,
You probably want to ask this as a kudoz for Spanish.
Anyway if I think I have a lot of charm I can say 'Te encanto, verdad?' for example.

Yes, you can Jun 4, 2004

Hi Vivek,

Some instances where you can use encantar in any person:

yo encanto serpientes y bailan (I charm snakes and they dance)
tú le encantas a Rita (Rita likes you very much)
me encantas (I like you very much)
me encantáis tú y María (I like very much María and you)
les encantamos (they like us very much)

Regards,
Cristóbal

Hi Vivek,
Some examples of the use of "encantar":

Él encanta con su voz
Ella encanta con la mirada

These expressions are of common use in Spanish.

Good luck,
Marianela

But yes, it's correct.
I teach Spanish to English-speakers and everybody asks the same question. I don't know who's spreading the rumour but it's not true that verbs like 'gustar' only exist in the third person. (That's true for 'llover' and 'nevar'). If 'me gusta' means 'I like him/her/it', then 'le gusto' means 'he/she/it likes me'.
It's actually very common to find gustar and many other verbs of the same kind in the first and second persons. You don't see this often in the case o

Your question was... Jun 5, 2004

...can 'encantar' be used in the third person?

The answer is yes, and moreover it can be used in the first and second person also.

Spanish speakers tend to be strict, but we actually do not obey any limitations, so feel free! Our language is freedom, the rules are just there to make sure that we can continue to understand one another.

That we do, and quite well.

Encantar y encantar Jun 5, 2004

Cuidado con el verbito.
Transitivo e intransitivo !

no es lo mismo que algo/alguien me encante a que yo encante a alguien.

Si alguien me encanta es que me gusta, mientras que si yo encanto a alguien lo estoy hipnotizando ( o algo peor)

me encanta, significa me gusta.
te encanto, quiere decir te controlo cual serpiente de bazar indio y no que le guste a esa serpiente.

Bueno, esto es lo que hasta el día de hoy he creído, tal vez me equivoque.
A ver, ¿y los filólogos qué opinan?

Me recuerda al chiste de la princesa que después del beso pasó de rana a bella princesa desnuda. Ella al ver la forma en que el príncipe la miraba, le dijo.
No lo hagas o quedarás encantado!

él lo hizo y quedó encantadísimo.

Ups, Sorry I forgot it is a English forum!

third person "se" and reflexive usage.
(they charm each other..they are charming to each other...they come across as charming to each other...or to one another for that matter -if we are talking of more than two persons or animals, more than two beings...) though "se encantan " usage is rare ...

Good Luck,
Patricia.
