I was wondering what the standard practice is for this, for example, would Le Haras du Cheval Blanc be: The White Horse Stud, The Cheval Blanc Stud, Le Cheval Blanc Stud,or would you just keep the French name in tact? Is there an accepted method or does it depend on the agency/company?

Always keep original version Mar 30, 2012

Always keep original version.
In general, translate the text in brackets.

That's a straightforward answer! Mar 30, 2012

That would be my instinct. But what if you are proofing a text and the names have already been translated, would you leave them as they are or should you change them back?

Nowadays the Names of Companies and others are kept as is. Mar 30, 2012

Nowadays the common practice is not to translate the name of Companies and others as: Apple, Home Depot, Superman, Batman, Volkswagen even when they have a translation,

I cannot thing of many reasons when you may or need to translate a brand name, as for instance if the client ask you, because it has an important meaning that need to be known, and others. However, is it not the standard. If you do place the translation, do it only the first time it appears in the translation and then place the original name into brackets, use the original name in the language of origin in the following papers.

Brand Names vs Organizations Mar 30, 2012

My clients usually ask me not to translate brand names, but they always require the translation of organizations in brackets.

Depends Mar 31, 2012

on whether the establishment has a translated name - eg youwould never dream of calling it the Red Windmill, it's the Moulin Rouge, but what about the White Horse Inn (actual name Zum Weissen Rössl) made famous by an operetta? Some companies have an offcial English name as well (Österreichische Post wants to be called Austria Post). Otehrwise, I would never ever translate such names.
