Recently I came across a situation where I need to submit a translation sample in English to Tamil Language pair. It was quit a small file and non-technical.
I finished the work within 20 minutes and double checked it to satisfy myself that there were no errors.
To my shock I received a report stating that it was totally wrong translation and full of grammatical mistakes. My only satisfaction is that both the proof reader and the reviewer could not locate a real mistake... The suggested corrections are: (Original Translation = OT; Suggested Correction = SC)
1. For Safety
OT: பாதுகாப்பிற்கான (For safety) - அதற்கு (for that) - எதற்கு (for what) - இதற்கு (for this)
SC: பாதுகாப்புக்கான (for Safety) - அதுக்கு (for that) - எதுக்கு (for what) - இதுக்கு (for this)

OT: அவசரகாலத் திட்டமிடல் (emergency planning - planning for unexpected situations)
SC: தற்செயல் திட்டமிடல் (casual planning - accidental planning)

SC: ஊடுருவிச் செல்லும் ஓர் (Simple separated a compound Tamil word)

OT: கலாச்சாரமேயாகும் (Simple separated a compound Tamil word)

These are all the suggested corrections; but the comment of the reviewer is: "Proper case suffixes are not used and thereby many sentences are grammatically incorrect. A few translations are wrong"
This is what I see as cheating the non Tamil speaking people with wrong guidance and with their own ignorance. As for the first comment, பாதுகாப்புக்கான is not a correct term but a "anamorphous" term of பாதுகாப்பிற்கான, you can see the samples that follows the term in point number 1.
In all other places, either he has simply suggesting alternative spellings or split the "Tamil Language Specific" Compound" words in to two different words.
Finally, he dared to do a Sandhi error, and suggest a wrong one on point number 8.
I have discussed in many instances that Tamil language has a Decided Preference for Active Voice, which in recent times has been overthrown by the English Languages Syntactical Structure. The English language has a decided preference for Passive Voice - but the Tamil has a DP of Active voice.
For Example:
Four People were arrested - is translated as நான்கு பேர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார்கள் - but when we speak, we say, நாலு பேர கைது செஞ்சுட்டாங்க; this is called the "Decided Preference" - நான்கு பேரைக் கைது செய்தார்கள்.
Without knowing the fundamental principles of languages, and not knowing the translation theories and principles, he dared to provide wrong and misleading comments.
What I astonished at was: "Many sentences are grammatically incorrect, and a few translations are wrong" - but the poor reviewer could not correct even a single sentence. If they are incorrect, it is their duty to suggest a correct one. It seemed both the reviewer and the proof reader are the same, working through different agencies. I really wonder, how educated people fall pray for mean money. Our final moto should be to keep the language alive.
The sample translated portion and the suggested corrections are given below for your view:
