I am translating an academic article in regards to Central American thought. There are various political parties, associations, conferences, etc. mentioned in the article and often give acronyms to refer later on in the paper. I am translating Spanish to English. Should I translate political party, organization, and conference names? If yes, do I change the acronym?

For example: La Unión Democrática Centroamericana (UDC)
Alianza para el Desarrollo Sostenible (ALDIES)
Conferencia Regional sobre Migración

I personally feel I should leave the political parties and associations/organizations in Spanish and not change their acronym. I'm not 100% sure about leaving conferences/meetings in Spanish, I think I should translate those to English.

What should I do?

I'd leave political parties in Spanish. This is an academic article, so readers will probably have at least a basic understanding of the language.

As for conferences, it depends on the context.

Starting with checking the facts. For example, the correct acronym of Alianza para el Desarrollo Sostenible is ALDES (not "ALDIES"):

Some of the conferences and international organisations may well have official names in English - after all, Central America includes Belize. If they do, then you should use it. And if some of those organisations in fact cover a wider geo-political area - CA plus the Carribbean, for example -, then there is a greater "risk" of there being an official name in English (not to mention French and Dutch).

If your client agrees, you could retain the acronyms, expand them into Spanish only the first time they show up, and then set up a glossary of acronyms, with the Spanish names and English translations, on one separate page. I have seen this done and it is very handy and efficient.
