One of our customers wants us to send them their Chinese and Japanese translation in a vector-based file (such as Illustrator's .ai). They tell me they cannot import the contents of our Word files themselves because they do not have the proper fonts installed

Any advice on this matter is more than welcome

Embedded fonts Oct 11, 2005

Can you not send a word-processor file with the fonts embedded? Failing that a PDF with (automatically) embedded fonts? If that's still not possible convert the PDF to GIF or JPEG.

Illustrator 7 and 8 output EPS files while Illustrator 9 and 10 output PDF according to:

So maybe PDF will be OK.

I've taken the easy way: I've found a Japanese translator in the UK who has InDesign. He imported the translations in EPS files.

The trick is to use an Asian version of your operating system. Or to have your computer "believe" he's running under an Asian OS by changing your regional settings. But this requires you to install about 250 MB of additional settings.

PS: Ever since I posted this topic I've been receiving Asian spam. Don't you just love the internet
