I've recently come across this fantastic site:
World Wide Words

"Michael Quinion's World Wide Words is the web authority on English etymology (word origins) and usage—come here for definitive information on some of the most interesting, amusing and downright weird words and phrases in the English language. [Dom Glennon’s Word site of the month at the Cambridge Dictionaries Online web site (February 2003).]"

"Logophiles will love this site, which provides scholarly essays on the meaning and origin of hundreds of words, from absquatulate (to decamp or abscond) to zenzizenzizenzic (the eighth power of a number). [PC Magazine, The top 100 Web Sites you didn’t know you couldn’t live without (25 March 2003)]"

Fantastic site Jun 21, 2003

Thanks, ildiko!

The site author obviously is as interested in words and phrases as most of us are, but he also takes the time to do a lot of research on language plus the time to post it as a newsletter.

Among other pearls, I found the first good explanation to the use of "persons" vs. "people".

Happy reading!
Elena
