I'm not sure that this issue belongs in this forum. Therefore, ProZ moderators please feel free to move it to a more appropriated one.

I would like to know your honest opinion on the «about me» section of my profile. It is still under construction, but the idea behind the skeleton is already quite visible. Suggestions as much criticism are welcome.

Another little thing: Do you think that a customer prefers a text paragraph (like the bootom one) or a simple list of attributes (like the top one)?

Image too big Jul 5, 2010

That train is too big for my 17 inch screen, so part of the info on your page stays outside the right border. I did not allow dynamic content to be displayed.

What do you intend to say with that train. Are you a railway specialist?

Regards
Heinrich

You should either hire a native English speaker to copy-write your page, or simply compose it in Spanish, your native language!

I see plenty of structural and syntactic errors in this small piece of English text.

For one, (all of the rhetorical) "questions" you are asking your audience are not really questions, but statements / subtitles, and therefore should have a different order ( the subject and auxiliary should change places), for example it's not: Why should you hire me... but it's "Why you should hire me", instead. The same applies to each statement. The way it is structured now, it creates quite the opposite effect to what you originally meant.

The "bla bla " this doesn't sound too professional. It reflects a kind of "I don't care" attitude or will you write something there when you are ready?
Instead of telling that you are the best you should show why you are the best.
Sample translations should be copied there or an arrow showing your Kudoz.

Regards,
Katalin

Thanks to inform me about the size issue. However, I believe the dynamic content issue is a ProZ one, because text does not resize at my screen either. Will look for a solution next days. And yes, I am a railway specialist as you can see at the browser tab.

Agree with Lingua 5B Jul 5, 2010

Also, the train image is a bit too large for my screen although it is a nice visual touch.
I'm probably not really all that qualified to comment though, because my own page is a bit chaotic, mainly because I don't really care what impression I give. I don't really specialised per se, so find it hard to limit my description of fields I have worked in, not wanting to leave anything out.
Too many translation sites seem to be more concerned with image and form rather than substance...

Of course, Katalin. The text as like the list are only samples to show the future page structure. And thanks for sharing your ideas about samples/kudoz.

Train Image size Jul 5, 2010

In fact too big. It's "too much information" visually speaking. Reduce by half. It then shall be able to be read.
As for the train specialist, should you need to offer in brazilian portuguese any day, don't hesitate to contact me. So am I.
Best Regards,

Thanks for sharing your honest opinion and thanks a lot for calling my attention to the potential adverse effects. As I told to Katalin they are only structural examples. And of course I will follow your suggestion to hire a native English speaker to do the english version. In my opinion, potential readers would prefer a simple list. But it is just that: my opinion.

It's not too big for my screen, and it's a very nice and dynamic visual touch that makes your specialization obvious at--truly!--first glance. But I agree, your clients will prefer a list that gives them as much information as possible in as short a time as possible.

Train picture Jul 5, 2010

The picture is 1000 pixels wide. Reduce this to 700 pixels and it would fit most screens, and I don't think the lower picture quality would be noticeable.

Resize the train into a small icon and use it as a bullet in bulleted lists. Will look cheesy perhaps but will also stick the railway thing deep in the reader's brain. Unless I'm wrong.

I don't see any text, except for headers in Spanish and "futuro texto".

Thanks a lot Krzysztof for the idea of resizing the train and use it as bullet. As you may read from the other posts before, my english level is far from a native one and I have removed the english text to avoid the potential adverse effects about which I have been warned.

Now, I should rethink the complete structure from scratch to avoid mistakes and make it easy to read.

tips Jul 5, 2010

Resize the photo through Photoshop, or other photo programme (Google's free Picasso).
Or, you could resize the photo through HTML codes.

Target your (potential clients) with Spanish and English/German communication. For example, in my profile I use DIV tags to make 2 columns, one for English and one for Spanish. The language other than your native language, in my opinion, does not have to be perfect, as you only translate into your native language. If you have non-Spanish speaking clients, then they may prefer you over translaters having their profiles entirely in Spanish, as clients may think that communication has to be in Spanish. Especially with German clients, I have noticed that they prefer communicating in German, but as my German writing would contain too many mistakes and my German friends are a bit lazy, I still haven't put up the German version yet.

Or, you could localize your profile: In About Me field, click on "customize for non-English languages". Thanks to your question, I found this feature, and will use it to adjust my profile. This also means you could include a link in the about me section that would able your visitors to view your profile in German, English, Spanish or any other language you may prefer.

Furthermore, I'd recommend keeping a profile short, and not list all the projects you have completed in the past years. And, ask clients for their WWA (willingness to work again).

Good luck
