Hello,

I need a legal dictionary on short notice and the 3 books available are:

Bachem & Hamblock

Collins

Romain

The Dietl/Lorenz is not available on short notice. So, which one of those named above?

Kind regards,

Albert.

Romain Sep 21, 2010

Hello Albert,

I have good experiences with Romain. It's very detailed and I mostly find the words that I'm looking for. There are short explanations about some terms.

But I can't compare it to the other ones as I don't know them.

Claudia

Claudia,

Thanks! I googled Romain and it seemed to be the most controversial dictionary; discussed on here but not in a good way if memory serves.

Romain and Dietl Sep 21, 2010

I have both Romain and Dietl and like both. It's a shame you can't get Dietel as that would probably be my recommendation. I don't know the others. I don't know if Dietel has more terms in it than Romain, but it seems to (possibly just because it is bigger).

Dietel has bigger font for easier reading and I find the terms are easier to find. Romain is smaller.

Romain is about A5 size and Dietel is bigger. I was suprised how small Romain was compared to Dietl ( I bought them at the same time).

I have not heard much about the others you mention. I would be interested in hearing other opinions about them. Do you have a web link to them?

Louisa

If Dietl is not available, try

Law dictionary:technical dictionary of the Anglo-American legal terminology including commercial and political terms : English-German, German-English
Dora von Beseler, Barbara Jacobs-Wüstefeld

You can search it online

Good luck

I use the Dietl CD-ROM and Romain paper edition, mainly. Also research meanings and cross-check terms in Black's and Creifelds.

Margaret Marks sometimes has reviews of dictionaries on her www.transblawg.org blog, so you might want to search there also.
