Hi everyone:

Here is a neat tool for counting a number of file formats, from HTML to PDF. The best part is that is free. I have checked it out, and it works quite well.

BTW, I'm in no way related, nor do I have a financial interest in the SW.

Regards,
Ricardo

thanks for sharing the info May 20, 2004

I've tried the tool Ricardo mentions and it's simple to use and fast. And free (yes, that's the best part!)

And I'm browsing through the resources on the page Spiros mentions and it is also an interesting place to take a look.

Thanks!

Rosa

This tool has been discussed in the fora before. It is buggy. Can you tell us with which file formats you tested it?

I tested it on several files. I'm not saying that this is the "ultimate" word-counting tool, just that it is a neat tool for people that need to get a quick image of what a job entails, as far as number of words.

To date, I have not found two programs that will give the same word count for a document. You can even get conflicting results between different versions of Word.

Here are the results:
File 1 (.doc format)

Word (Properties) 1462 words
Abacus 1462 words
Trados analyze 1510 words
Note: The document contained several text boxes which neither Word nor Abacus included in their total.

File 2 (.html format)

Trados analyze 3198 words
Abacus 3115 words

File 3 (.pdf format)

Abacus 596 words
Word .rtf (Properties) 558 words
Trados 558 words

Cheers,
Ricardo
