I've just started up as a translator and have recently subscribed to LANTRA-L. To start with I received a few mails, and then nothing at all. I've tried sending messages to LISTSERV as recommended, and I've also sent a mail to the list owners to no avail. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before. I'd also like to subscribe to a few other mail lists if anyone could recommend some please.

Thanks for any advice

Scam? Mar 8, 2012

Karen, there has been a lot of discussion recently in the 'Scams' thread about supposed job-finding services, I don't know if this is what you have here, but if so, then you may need to be wary. I hope you won't mind if I say that people in your position, i.e. just starting out, are particularly vulnerable to many of these scams, as naturally one is eager to get hold of new contacts and jobs as quickly and easily as possible.

I would recommend you, and others in your position, to take a good in-depth look at all the educational information available on ProZ.com about how to recognize and avoid scams.

Lantra-L not a scam Mar 8, 2012

Lantra-L has been around for a long time. I unsubscribed long ago because some of the members were really rude. There's enough incivility in the world without having to look for it online.

Tony, I know you mean well, but you could have looked LANTRA-L up first - it has been around for years and is just a Usenet mailing list.

Karen, in general I'd recommend joining your national translators' association (which I guess for you is the SFT?), working towards qualified membership if it's available. Most associations have mailing lists for translators - the ITI here in the UK has various networks based on language and specialist interests. The SFT certainly has networks and email lists.

Well, I don't see why I should have to go and look it up, Karen might have given us that little bit of extra information in the first place...

However, since Karen has mentioned just starting out, and the thought of 'subscribing' to various things, I don't think an additional scam warning can do any harm — from the number of people who get caught by these things, it appears that the word needs spreading, and hopefully anyone reading this thread will at least have been made aware of the possibility.

Karen, I'm glad you haven't been scammed! And do keep a weather eye out for other scams in the future

Sorry Tony, I naïvely assumed everyone had heard of LANTRA! Thanks for your thoughtful advice. I've subscribed to ProZ.com scam alert center as I am aware of these practices, and you're right that the more people talk about it the less people will fall into the trap of scams.

Thanks Angela,

I am aware of the SFT and fully intend joining when I have become a bit more established, and I'll certainly get in contact with the ITI. However, I still don't know why I'm not getting mail from LANTRA!?
