I have a file that is password protected and the password has not been given by the client. When saved under a different name, the file can be translated using TRADOS workbench. However the file cannot be cleaned. The cleanup option JUST DOESNT WORK showing a mesage box that teh file is password protected. Any way to get out of this disgusting state??
Thanks in advance!

If nothing else helps... Aug 12, 2004

If your original doc does not have any hidden character, you can try by deleting all hidden characters. It is just one passage and gives a perfectly cleaned document.

If you edited some TU before cleaning, though, your TM will not include these last changes. A workaround for this is just to reopen the changed (or all) TUs in Trados. Normally this is a very quick process.

Get the password from your Client Aug 12, 2004

Search the internet for password recovery software for Word (you can find numerous options for it).

Or simply use the Word macr to clean up the document.
In Word press ALT+F8, search for a macro called t4winclean.main and let it run in your document. You will have to clean up all headers and footers manually in the same way, but this works.

Bear in mind, that the TM will NOT be actualised in this way.
This macro has been discussed here on numerous cases, so you will surely find additional informations on this topic in this and other ProZ fora.

Sometimes I do this when the job is urgent and there is no time to look for the real Trados or Word error and fix it in a proper way.

The point is that my source (hidden) text changes color (after it is translated) according to my own Trados settings (you can choose your own settings).
In Word you should choose Edit > Find & Replace - and choose to replace with NOTHING (space) all the text of my source text color.

May be there are another options to marke the text that should be replaced/deleted, but this is the way I do it. It works perfectly.

Hope this can help.

copy the contents to a clean file Aug 12, 2004

try copying the contents of your file (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C) and pasting it (Ctrl+) to a new file in word. This should solve your problem.

But don't copy the last paragraph mark Aug 12, 2004

That ought to work but it's important not to copy over that final paragraph mark (like a black, backwards capital P when you have the show hidden characters function on).

No, Word macro does not update TM Aug 12, 2004

But this is no limitation, hence you should clean up only when your translation is finally edited. When editing translation to make the necessery changes it is allways more advisable to do this with opening and closing segments, as you would translate them once again, as if you do not do this in thuis way there is allways a possibility that you damage a segment delimiter or other formatting.

Just choose the twin4clean option in "Tools" "Makro" in word and it cleans the file as if you were Traods to do it!
