Good morning all,

For those working in French, this tool can prove extremely useful:

http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/

I'm interested in learning if there is a comparable online lexicographic resource in English.

Apparently the British National Corpus has an online sample version, but for some reason it failed to download properly on my system; I need to take a closer look.

Also, I read that there is a Cobuild Bank of English available online but I need to investigate further.

Can anyone suggest a comparable tool to CNRTL?

Many thanks,
Catherine

Have you tried this? Jul 6, 2013

My French is quite rusty, but it seems like it gives the definition and etymology of a word?

What about this? It's been a pretty useful site for me.

Thanks Orrin but... Jul 6, 2013

Thank you Orrin, this is a great website I wasn't aware of. Good one to keep.

However a lexicographic resource is what I'm after.
Good ones include a wealth of real use examples (ie. not made up) for each term, be they from articles, novels, whatever.
Perhaps I've got too used to free-and-easy-to-use CNRTL and I'm assuming each language should have their own. Call me spoilt!

Cheers,
C
