For mere hedonistic reasons, I would like to find a website that lists the major and minor languages of the world by the number of speakers. I would be interested in all languages above 1 million (or even 100,000) speakers.

Does anyone know where to find such a list?

(I have been searching the net for an hour now, but \"I still haven\'t found what I\'m looking for\")

thanks,

Csaba Ban

The Ethnologue site is the most comprehensive site that describes ALL 5,000 languages currently spoken in the world. The problem is there is no list that specifies the number of speakers from most spoken to least spoken; however, each language has the latest census number.

By the way, this site is the premier source of information on endangered, minority, indigenous languages as well as rare dialects, pidgin/creole varieties. A veritable wealth of information for linguaphiles like many of us.

You can also search the bibliography:

thank you so far May 2, 2002

Thanks for your search on this issue. In fact I opened Ethnologue before asking this question, and I think that they have an excellent site. I was just hoping to find a resource with languages ranked by the number of speakers.

I\'ll keep searching... If I find something useful, I will make it public.

If God is not an American, at least we have Angelfire May 3, 2002

Some forgotten text out of my past said French ranked 11th...Angelfire gives it second place. What are the baselines here?
