Since I began originally as a verbal interpreter, I am not sure what some of written/ formal terminology means. Will somebody please explain to me what CAT tools are? Thank you. This, by the way, is a phenomenal website.

WELCOME!!! Nov 22, 2004

Hi Alina,

Welcome to ProZ - I am also a relatively new member and I agree with you that this is a phenomenal site. I hope you enjoy your stay here as much as I have so far.

CAT Tools stands for "Computer Aided Translation Tools", which are programs developed to aid translators in managing terminology.

One of the main aspects of CAT Tools is that it 'remembers' how you translated individual segments (=sentences, fragments, words) in a database called a TM (=Translator Memory). The next time a similar segment occurs, the tool suggests a translation based on what you have already done.

Theoretically, the more you translate, the better the tool will function - at first, nothing will really happen, unless the document you are translating is really full of repetitions.

Have fun!
