I don't know if such a glossary exists, but I am looking for a specialized English/French glossary of Technical terms.

When I say "Technical", I talk about technical fields, such as Automobile, Industry, Aeronautics, Logistics, Transportation, and such. Just the major traditional Technical fields. (not "exotic" fields, very limited in terms of translation needs and market).

Most glossaries in the technical translation field are very specialized, and sometimes not freely available, but with the expansion of open source technologies and the Internet, maybe there a are a few ones available out there, and with many terms?

My goal would be to be able to find quickly and efficiently a technical term and translate it in French. And to be able to translate for specialized translation agencies.

Ideally I could integrate these glossaries in my CAT tool , but that would be considered as translation memories I guess? (TM's)? Or bilingual files?

IATE? Jul 29, 2016

Hi Alexandre,

Have you checked out the IATE download? While it is more general and doesn't cover all of the fields you mentioned, it does cover some.

Generally, it covers:
• Agriculture, Agri-foodstuffs and Environment
• Employment And Working Conditions, Business And Competition, International Relations, Politics, European Union and International Organisations
• Production, Energy and Industry
• Law, Finance and Science
• Social Questions and Education and Communications
• Economics, Trade, Geography and Transport

The download is free. If you don't want to spend time extracting English to French it is also available on the TM-Town Terminology Marketplace for English to French with various formatted files for different CAT tools.

There are also a few other English to French glossaries available, covering more specialized fields.

The massive multinational agencies would no doubt be very interested in those services. I think you'll find that the specialised ones prefer their translators to be able to justify the use of a particular technical term thanks to a deep understanding of the subject.
