If you have MS Word, you can simply copy the text from Excel and paste in Word; thus, you can use the word count function of MS Word. However, this method may be somewhat slow and even cause the programs not to respond.

You may also download and try some special tools; namely, PractiCount, Total Assistant, etc.

Right, copy and paste Apr 23, 2005

Someone else posted this recently, I think - in any case, yes the only way I have found to count the words in an Excel spreadsheet is to copy the text to Word. It'd be nice if a future version of Excel did have its own word count feature, but that may never be the case since word counts go along with word processing software, typcially.

Open the Excel in Word Apr 25, 2005

One can open the Excel worksheet in Word2000. If the feature is not installed, then one can install it from the installation CD. In Word: Open, select All files, open the .xls file. Then you can count the words, characters, etc. Another way is to save the Excel file in windows .txt format, then it can be easily opened with Word.
Good luck.

There is, indeed, a macro counting words in EXCEL on the click of a mouse.

Go to Google and type "AplusCombiCounter for Excel".

Kind regards

Ben
