Pharmaceutical vs medical dictionaries

I have purchased some medical dictionaries from Spanish-English and French-English. My experience of the pharmaceutical industry however is that the terminology used there is slightly different from that used in medicine. It seems to be impossible, in the UK anyway, to buy pharmaceutical dictionaries for these language combinations. Does anyone with experience know if medical dictionaries suffice for translating pharmacetical texts?

Thanks.

Sarah

Pharmaceutical terms are rather special. As a chemist I had some medical (general) and pharmaceutical contacts beyond my translation job. They are quite different. Drug impact is the only point in common. I thought it was essential. Not at all. There is a medicinal chemistry that connects chemistry and pharmaceuticals. Maybe you should search some terms there.

You are quite correct that pharmaceutical terminology is different from medical. I use a trilingual pharmaceutical dictionary (French, English and German, so it won't help you with Spanish) called 'Woerterbuch Pharma' by Anita Maas and James Brawley. It's particularly good on manufacturing processes and chemistry, less so on research. The ISBN is 3-87193-213-2, and I'm fairly sure I bought it from Grant & Cutler. Hope this helps.

Pharmaceutical dictionary reference Mar 15, 2006

Here is the reference of a pharmaceutical dictionary (French, English, German, Spanish), which could be useful although pocket-sized

Pharmaceutical dictionary (4th dictionary)

Editio Cantor Verlag

ISBN 3-87193-253-1

I got it through Amazon Germany (amazon.de)
