I have to translate into French the US GAAP accounting plan at a client's to be used by the employees of the accounting department in France.

Is there anyone having any documentation or a French version of the mentioned document ?

Thank you for your assitance.

Patrick,

Every company has its own chart of accounts, so you're not going to find it anywhere, I'm afraid. Neither has US GAAP been translated into any other languages (apart from extracts). However, various French accounting firms have reports and other documents on US GAAP on their websites, as do the French offices of the Big Four.

In addition, quite a large number of books on international accounting are now available in French, although the majority focus on IFRSs.

In turn, IFRSs might be a good place to look for terminology, as the terms used in US GAAP and IFRSs are often identical or at least similar.

Otherwise, I can only recommend a good dictionary, and the best En-Fr accounting dictionary is most certainly the Ménard "Dictionnaire de la comptabilité et de la gestion financière", 2e edition, ICCA/CICA 2004, ISBN 1-55385-121-8

Finally, I suggest you look at the Financial Translators Forum:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/financialtranslators/

where you can ask questions.

HTH,
Robin

I have the right translation for you Apr 13, 2006

It means Principe Comptable Généralement Reconnu PCGR. I recommend you buy the Dictionnaire de la Comptabilité et de la gestion financière by Louis Menard, FCA. It's a very precious tool for financial translations

what I really need Apr 13, 2006

What I need is not the "translation" of US GAAP as it is an American accounting standard with no real equivalent.

I will work later on with the accountants to provide them with the French terminology they are using "in-house" in French.

My concern is to be able to know exactly the closest equivalents to avoid any major misunderstanding, even though I will check with the accountants once I have finished my translation and/or localisation.

The other parameter is that it will be adapted to Oracle Applications (for accounting applications).

Having a translation done by a bilingual accountant mastering both plans would be an asset.

While I was searching for useful resources I found this document on the internet : La Comptabilité pour traducteurs, Understanding documents to translate them"

Go to the CICA website Apr 13, 2006

(Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants) at cica.ca, which is bilingual. Click on Français in the top right hand corner, and then enter PCGR as a search term - the second hit looks promising.

But having a translation would, of course, help, as it would provide a lot of the terminology. As I said, though, you should see how much you can get out of the English and French versions of IFRSs.

But you will need substantial accounting knowledge and experience of US GAAP to translate the chart of accounts (plan comptable) into French!

My concern is to be able to know exactly the closest equivalents to avoid any major misunderstanding, even though I will check with the accountants once I have finished my translation and/or localisation.

That is a very admirable concern, but it will take you a long time to learn all this if you don't already know it. In accounting, as in translation, there is no room for *any* misunderstanding, major or not.

The other parameter is that it will be adapted to Oracle Applications (for accounting applications).

Then I suggest that you try to lay your hands on a copy of the French version of Oracle Financials.

I sure that David would be willing to help you, but I don't think he's very much of a US GAAP specialist. However, he might be able to point you in the direction of suitable literature.

I don't suppose that the Transaccount project (http://www.transaccount.org/) actually came to anything, but it wouldn't harm getting in touch with some of the people named there (if they/their organizations are still around...).

Robin
