Are there any freeware, Trados-compatible CAT tools? If not, are there any Trados-compatible CATs available at a more reasonable price?

Wordfast Jan 19, 2007

is - as far as I know - a more affordable tool that is compatible with Trados. In the early days it used to be free, but now it is available at a price that is lower than that of Trados.

Affordable option Jan 19, 2007

Hi,

An affordable alternative is the Personal Edition of Heartsome XLIFF Translation Editor. It costs €80 (about US$100).

Heartsome's XLIFF editor supports translating tagged RTF, TTX files and several other formats.

Regards,
Rodolfo

Wordfast : free version, only limited in size of TM Jan 19, 2007

Wordfast still offers a free version, with all the features but a restriction in the TM size (5000 Units).

Since you can create a new TM for each project or client, and use more than one TMs together in the same project, it is enough for most current jobs.

OmegaT is a complete free CAT Tools from the Sourceforge community.

The official homepage of OmegaT is at www.omegat.org, and the download repository is at sourceforge.net/projects/omegat. The URL indicated by joanna_j is not associated with the official OmegaT project.

It's not entirely free, but the freelancer version is, and it's fully functional, no time or TM limits and even had features the competition doesn't offer, like workflows and term extraction.

You download the trial freelance version and register on their site as a freelancer. Within 7 to 10 days, they send you an activation key that will unlock all the features in the software. What you do to "pay" for it is simply to be part of their list of freelancers. Their strategy is to sell the agency version to agencies for money, but with the argument that "Oh look! Many freelancers already use it and are familiar with it, and they don't have to pay so they have no excuse not to use it!". This would mean that agencies who are willing to pay for the software will have a bunch of freelancers available to them to work on their contracts, and those freelancers will not say they don'T have the software because it costs too much - it's free.

I have tried it, and although the interface is a bit cluttered - I imagine because there are plenty of things you can tweak and the software gives you lots of room to customize - it takes a little bit of time to get used to it. But it uses almost the same logic as the competition, and can export to TMX, so you can even do Trados jobs on it.

Why not give it a try? It's free!
