Hello,

I will be writing a translation test for a company and will be translating from German into English. There will be five sections, short paragraphs on one page and each paragraph will be a different specialty (one general, one medical, one legal, one technical, and I don't remember the last one.. maybe financial).

Are there good dictionaries online for each of these specialties? Are there resources online to prepare for these types of test? How can I prepare for the test?

I would appreciate any all feedback from you. I will post anything I can find here as well. Thank you in advance.

got a question... Jun 20, 2007

... Why are they asking you to do a translation from different specialities? You can't be a "jack-of-all-trades".

Have you translated German to English before? It sounds like you haven't, to be honest. Do you have any DE-EN dictionaries?
Yes, there are some excellent resources online for GermanEnglish such as Leo, Gesundheit.de and so on.

Do the test to the best of your ability and check, check and check again. Get someone else to read the translation before you deliver it, if possible.

Good luck,
Orla

thank you Jun 20, 2007

Hello Orla,

Thank you for your reply.

I have translated from German into English before. But this test is only 90 minutes and they don't provide dictionaries. I don't have specialized dictionaries so I asked if I can use the internet and they said no promises, but if available, I can make use of a computer. Right now it looks like they will have a computer available for me.

Are there any other dictionaries that you can recommend specifically for technical, legal, medical and financial terms?

Hi Bahar,

Check GlossPost here at Proz.com. DE-EN is probably our richest pair in terms of resources.

Good luck!

Well, Langenscheidt and Pons offer a wide range of specialised technical paper dictionaries, so you could check out their sites.
I am not a legal translator, so I cannot recommend any legal dictionaries.

The test sounds quite unusual to me, quite frankly. You normally do them at home, using your own resources. Is it for an in-house job?
