A client has asked us to translate a handwritten document. The client does not know what language it is. I have tried the language guessers at http://www.foreignword.com.

The document starts like this:

Ku caasho sahal axmad

eedo igo guduun salaan wacan oowanaagsan eedo waxaa ku salaamaya....

Any suggestion would be most appreciated.

bella domanda, Paola! Jan 27, 2003

sembrerebbe somalo (non so se traslitterato dai loro geroglifici o se in uso come lingua ufficiale con caratteri latini).

dai un\'occhiata al sito:

In ogni caso a me sembra proprio somalo!

Somali or Ethiopian Jan 27, 2003

I was also thinking something along the lines of a north-east African language. You can see the influence of Arabic (guttural?) and the long vowel endings point to Ethiopian or Somali. If you have an Ethiopian look at it, he or she could help you zero into the region. By the way, it could also be Sudanese (another African language greatly influenced by Arabic).

To me, it looks like Somali rather than Swahili, after having a look at the samples of both languages in the Language Museum, no matter what the Content Analysis Language Identifier says. Best regards. MG.

I see Somali quite often on Camden Council leaflets here in London, and this is my idea of what it\'s like, with double vowels, c\'s and x\'s. If it isn\'t Somali, the next language that comes to mind is another possibly Arabic-influenced African language, Wolof.
