Hello,

Can anybody recommend a good online dictionary with medical abbreviations (French to English in particular) please? I am struggling on a medical translation that is full of them, and before I start pestering people on proz.com, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good webiste first?!

Thanks!

Sian - I have been using this one for ages. Although it is German, the explanations come up in German, English and French - or Greek or Latin.

It is the most comprehensive I know - there might be even better ones out there. If you come across them, please let me know.

Best wishes,

Gisela

Hi Marie Aug 7, 2007

Hi Marie-Christine,

gosh, how time goes by! It's been a while since E'burgh. Hope you are well!

Ages ago I found another little gem on an Austrian website:
http://webapp.uibk.ac.at/terminologie/trm_start.html
by the 'Terminologie-Datenbank des Instituts für Translationswissenschaft'

It's in German, English, Frech, Italian and Spanish. I mainly use it for the medical stuff, but they have loads of other subject. It is by no means comprehensive, but they keep adding, and sometimes you can't access it - that's presumablly when they are in the process of adding.

Hope you are enjoying what's left of summer!

Gisela

Here what I found Aug 7, 2007

I found these three glossaries in my data base:

a general one, in English:

http://www.jdmd.com/glossary/index.html

another one, for pharmarcology, also in English
http://www.usp.org/pdf/EN/aboutUSP/acronyms.pdf

and the third one for radiology:
http://www.nar.din.de/sixcms_upload/media/1378/Abkzungen%202006.pdf

Maybe it helps a little!

Will attempt to teach you how to fish :-) Aug 8, 2007

1) www.google.com
2) Click on Advanced Search
3) Inside the first box titled "with all of the words" please type medical glossary (no symbols and just a space in between the two words).
4) From the File Format pull-down menu, choose "Adobe Acrobat PDF (.pdf)"
5) From the Occurences pull-down menu, choose "in the title of the page"
6) If you would like to choose any other options, such as Language, do not hesitate to do so.
7) Click on Google Search button.
9) I hope this helps.

Regards.

PS: As a minor variation to the above procedure, in step #4 try choosing "Microsoft Word (.doc)" instead of "Adobe Acrobat PDF (.pdf)"

I had completely forgotten about these two - I previously converted them to an Excel file and then incorporated them into my large 'personal medical dictionary'.

Thansk for the http://www.jdmd.com/glossary/index.html, which I have saved in my bookmarks!
