The European multilingual thesaurus on health promotion in 12 languages is a product of international co-operation and financed by the European Commision.

The thesaurus is available in twelve languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

The aim of the thesaurus is to improve the communication and the collaboration in the field of health promotion and health education at the European level through stimulation of a common, uniform way of retrieval of terms and concepts.

This thesaurus can be used as a source for updating national thesauri or for developing standardisation of terms. The thesaurus consists of:

Alphabetical display of the preferred terms in English with 11 equivalent terms in other languages

Macrostructure (English), with systematic display of terms according to the macrostructure

Permuted index (English).

Alphabetical display of the preferred and non-preferred terms with the hierarchical and associative relationships (Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish)

Key index (Danish-English, Dutch-English, Finnish-English, French-English, German-English, Greek-English, Italian-English, Norwegian-English, Portuguese-English, Spanish-English, Swedish-English)

The thesaurus concerns the key issues of health education, health promotion and patient education at European level. The selected descriptors of health issues are mostly related to health behaviour and issues, which are often subjects of patient education, consumer information and educational materials. The emphasis has been placed on the practice of health promotion.

The choice of concepts is based on the field of health promotion in the participating European regions. Some concepts can be more important in one region than in another.

The thesaurus is available on this site as PDF file and textfile.
