Following on the steps of a very recent and reasonable suggestion that proposed a sort of dictionary database for Proz, I wanted to start a dictionary thread that could perhaps work as a temporary substitute while (and if) that excellent idea is implemented.

Following on the steps of a very recent and reasonable suggestion that proposed a sort of dictionary database for Proz, I wanted to start a dictionary thread that could perhaps work as a temporary substitute while (and if) that excellent idea is implemented.

The idea is simple - you write a short entry for a dictionary (or dictionaries) that you particularly like for the Ger>Eng language pair and that you would like to share as a useful resource for all fellow translators. The only rules/suggestions would be:

A) (Rule) It has to be a physical dictionary, i.e. not an online dictionary, glossary, etc. Not because those aren't useful, but rather as a way of keeping this thread limited and of helping people make intelligent choices when it comes to spending money in expanding their personal horde or horde-to-be of dictionaries.

B) (Suggestion) If possible, avoid non-specialized Ger>Eng dictionaries (unless you know a REALLY good one).

C) (Suggestion) Start with broader subjects (i.e. technical/engineering, financial, etc. dictionaries) and then get into the really specific ones. But by all means, if you have a favorite dictionary providing translations for all the cat subspecies that simply should not be missed by those interested, go ahead and include it right away.

D) (Rule) Don't repeat entries, but feel free to include a short-ish comment on previous dictionaries (together with your new entry) if you feel that it could be helpful.

E) I think it would be a good idea for this to happen in all language pairs. Monolingual threads (e.g.. dictionaries explaining marketing terminology) could also be a good idea here.

With that said, and if anyone else is interested in participating, here's my initial contribution:

Title: Ernst Wörterbuch der industriellen Technik, Band I
Area: Technical/Engineering
Author/Editos: Dr.-Ing. Richard Ernst / Udo Amm
Publishing House: Brandstetter Verlag
Edition: 6th edition (2004)

Although some people mention that the price tag is a bit hefty, the Ernst (as most people call it) is worth every single penny. True, it will not answer every single question that technical/engineering translators throw at it, and the translations themselves are clunky on a few occasions, but it is still my dictionary of choice when it comes to having a central work of reference for technical translations in the Ger>Eng language pair. It is easy to understand, well-organized, has a bazillion (actually, 220,000) entries, and covers not only technology and engineering, but also basic sciences and general industrial terminology. A must for anyone who is starting their collection of reference dictionaries.

That's a good start! Feb 4, 2008

Thanks for that.
Would you like to have other entries added to this thread, or should we start new threads?

Clarification Feb 4, 2008

Hi Margreet,

I was thinking that it would be best to start a new thread for each language pair. Except the Ger>Eng pair - this would be the right forum thread for that one. Although this will increase the number of threads significantly, I feel it will also make it easier for anyone who wants to browse through them in the future. (And, ahem, of course I should have clarified that from the very beginning)

What about GlossPost?! Feb 4, 2008

The idea is simple - you write a short entry for a dictionary (or dictionaries) that you particularly like for the Ger>Eng language pair and that you would like to share as a useful resource for all fellow translators.

That would be the place for this kind of information, even if the prime target is on-line repositories.
