An interesting development for those working in the UK market in particular, and probably indicative of a wider trend.

Pity that didn't make it The Royal Institute of Linguists. It would have been nice to have had a FRIL to my name...

You are now an FCIL Aug 7, 2005

Hi Jack,

Have you got round to reading the latest issue of The Linguist yet? If you read Page 102, you will discover that you are now an FCIL (and I am an MCIL).

how about everyone else? Aug 12, 2005

Whilst many people are congratulating the IoL for obtaining its Charter, others are woried about the implications that this will have for all the free-lance interpreters and translators who work part-time, either because they need to have another source of income to pay the bills or for personal or family reasons.
For interpreting and translating to become chartered professions is most probably an excellent move forward but this particular charter is very vague in terms of access to membership and more crucially does not include any provisions for newcomers. Most chartered professions are based on well oiled systems of apprenticeship....
It would be a very positive thing if those of you who are MIL or FIL could press upon the now Chartered Institute of Linguists, the importance of supporting all professionals in relation to their level of qualification and expertise and not just in relation to their ability to work full time.
