Is it possible to open and translate Framemaker (.mif) files with Wordfast Pro?
I tried to open the file from Wordfast Pro but I received an error message ("not supported file").

Thank you very much for any help!!

Evelyne

Hi Evelyne,

Currently .MIF is not a supported file format in WFP, but it will be supported in a future release within the next few months. I will update you when this becomes available.

Sincerely,

Kristyna

Metatexis Jul 1, 2009

Metatexis is another fine CAT, installs into Ms Word, as a macro. You can try a full version for 30 days, I guess. Translates mif files, as well. In case you use Wf as a macro within Ms Word, there is a continuous option to disable one or another, to avoid conflicts.

Thank you Kristyna! Jul 2, 2009

Thank you for your prompt answer Kristyna!

I have another question:
when it will possible to open mif files with Wordfast Pro,
after I did the translation, can I convert back the txml file to mif?
I ask it because I'm working with an agency that uses Trados, and with Trados this is possible, I think. But I don't want to buy Trados....
But I'm very happy to work with this agency...

Thank you very much!
Kind regards,
Evelyne

Hi Evelyne,

Yes, that is exactly how it will work. You will translate the TXML and then convert back to MIF.

Sincerely,

Kristyna

Hey Dragomir,

I've been trying to get Metatexis to successfully open a .mif file. Of course, it opens, but all the .mif info is still there, like table widths, fonts, mappings, etc.

I don't need all this, I just want our text.

How do I hide all the formatting?

Many thanks,
Ian

Dear Ian,

Please download and install the latest version of Wordfast Professional available at:
http://www.wordfast.com/store_download.html

It is very good for MIF files and you have several options under Edit > Preferences for the FramMaker filter.

Wordfast Pro can translate MIF files as follows:

- Create/open a project ("File" menu) and a translation memory.

- "Open" the source file (MIF) you want to translate ("File" menu).

- Insert the translation in the target cell and move to the next segment using Alt+Down.

- Make sure you insert the tags/placeables by using Ctrl+Alt+Right to select a tag and Ctrl+Alt+Down to insert it.

- After finalizing the translation, press Alt+End; "Save".

- Select "Save Translated file" from "File" menu to have the target translated file in the same original format (MIF) to send back to your client.

Please try that and let me know if you have any questions.
