Is WF Pro designed only to end segments on carriage returns?

Is there any way to make it segment on a full stop (at least)?

I have tried checking/unchecking "Segmentation on break", but it seems to have no effect.

What does "Segmentation on break" mean?

The expand/shrink segment commands do nothing.

Thanks.

Dear Laurence,

No! The main end-of-segment mark is the full-stop.

This is the default setting.

What is your source language?

Have you tried more than one file/text?

If you checked it, it would change the segmentation to be on a paragraph basis.

Looking forward to your reply!

TOPIC STARTER
Mystery formatting issue Dec 9, 2009

Thanks for the clarification about segmentation rules, Yasmin.

I went back to check that the documents I was translating had been segmenting beyond full stops, and I pulled out the following example:

"La persona titular de la Direcció General d'Igualtat d'Ootunitats en el Treball resoldrà si es concedeixen o no els ajuts. La resolució es notificarà per correu als intererssats. Si no recau resolució expressa en el termini esmentat, la sol·licitud s’entén denegada."

which WF Pro treated as a single segment, without the option of shrinking.

I checked to see whether there were any obvious formatting peculiarities around the full stops (such as non-breaking spaces), but nothing was apparent.

However, as a final test I cut-and-pasted this same passage as unformatted text and then ran the document through WF Pro again, and this time it returned three segments, as I would expect.

This workaround resolves the issue for my purposes. If you are interested in investigating it further for your own purposes, I can tell you that the text came from a MS Word document that was most probably a copy-and-paste from a website.

Thanks for answering these simple questions - with any luck they will help others too.
