How does restoring a lost translation memory in WordFast Classic work?

In the Wordfast Technical Reference manual, I read that :
If a translation memory is lost, cleaning up the segmented files that produced this TM will recreate the corresponding TM with its translation units.

I did a test. I created a bilingual file and saved it. I deleted the translation memory and performed a clean-up (Tools > Clean-up) on the bilingual file. I cannot see where the recreated TM is located.

They're in your current TM Jul 18, 2010

Cleaning up a bilingual file causes the segments to be added to the current TM (i.e. the one that you can see in Wordfast -> Setup -> TM -> Current TM (Selected TM).

If you wish to add those segments in to a separate TM, you have to create it first, then clean up the bilingual file(s).

You decide where you save the TM, for example, I have dedicated folder for TMs and Glossaries.

The only possibility I can think of is that, after having done your huge work, you created a new TM, which is empty, or nearly empty. I am fairly sure that there is no Wordfast bug but that you did something unusual.

2 suggestions:
- search for your TM on your computer, using Copernic Desktop Search or Google Desktop Search (it is a .txt file). Look into it (read it in Wordpad or Word): as it is a plain text file, the segments should be visible, with their date.
- if you cannot find it, create a new TM, then open the .txml file of your huge translation and commit all segments to this new TM. Verify if the segments are visible in Wordpad or Word.

Does this help?

Make sure you are running WFP 2.4.0.1. Then do the following:

• Go to Edit > Preferences > Translation Memory
• Enable the setting "Write unedited fuzzy and exact segments to a TM"
• Go to the PM perspective and select the Cleanup tab
• Under Update TM Options, enable the Update TM setting
• Click the TM Preferences link under Update TM Options and create your new TM
• Next to Local TM under Update TM Options, select your TM from the pull-down
• Add completed TXML file(s) you worked on with the lost TM in the pane under File name
• Click the Cleanup button
• Check your new TM contents in the TM Administration perspective
