TXML format Nov 12, 2010

Since *.txml format is the proprietary product of WordFast Pro, you have two options to work with *.itd format. 1) Open the source *.txml file in SDL Edit and translate it 2) if the source file is unavailable, open *.txml file in a text editor (e.g. NotePad)>Copy and save as *.doc in MS Word > Open this *.doc file in SDL Edit and translate (badly ugly due to legacy tags from *.txml format)> Save the translation target as *.doc. You get the translated file in *.txml format after saving this *.doc file in text format (unicode) but not bilingual: only target texts remain. You still has an easier way to translate with WordFast Anywhere (a free online software).

ANL file solution Feb 26, 2012

The best choice is to treat the TXML as a XML file. Create a New Project in SDLX an import the TXML files as XML files (ignore the warnings about WRONG FORMAT while doing it). You will be able to customize the fields you want to translate and save your preferences as an ANL file (like an INI for TTX but for ITD files).
Translate the ITD files and when you create your translations you will have a perfectly translated TXML file. SDLX is completely useful for TXML files, you just need to create the correct ANL fileicon_wink.gif

"SDL" does not necessarily mean SDLX Feb 26, 2012

FWIW, the original poster didn't say anything about SDLX: he only talked about "SDL". Of course, SDL is a company, not a CAT tool, but it's more likely he meant SDL Trados Studio (the current CAT tool of SDL) rather than SDLX (a obsolete piece software hardly anyone uses any more).

A detailed description of a way to translate TXML files in SDL Trados Studio can be found here:
